1. The Bible tells us. The Bible is the source book and basis of Christianity. It is the Christian's only authority for faith and practice.
2. Are you content with your present spiritual condition?
(Phil. 3:13,14) We need to read the Bible! 2 Tim. 3:14-17.
A time when you as a Christian withdraw from all the cares, distractions and worries of the day to read the Bible and to pray, turning with thanks and praise to the Lord for help and instruction.
1. God commands us to study His Word. Josh 1:8, 2 Tim 2:15.
2. The Bible is God's words sent to us. What a gift! Should we insult Him by not reading all He has to say? Zech 7:12, 2 Pet 1:15-21, 1 Pet 1:10-12, 1 Cor 10:11, Rom 15:4.
3. His Word convicts us and empowers us to overcome our sinfulness (if we read it). 2 Tim 3:16,17, Heb 4:12,13, 1 Thess 2:13, 2 Pet 1:4.
4. Bible reading is essential for the cultivation of our confidence in God. Rom 10:14-17, 15:4, Prov 22:19-21, Luke 1:4, John 20:30,31. The Bible is the chief witness to Christ. Luke 16:30,31, 2 Pet 1:15-21, John 5:37-47, Luke 24:27.
5. God keeps our souls from falling away or into sin through our holding to His Word. Prov 2:1-22, 1 Tim 4:15,16, Matt 13:18-23, John 15:4-11, 2 Pet 3:15,16.
6. We are going to face troubles in our life, so we will want to be prepared for those times by having learned His Word from consistent, daily Bible reading. We can avoid having to learn by hard experiences by taking heed now to what He says! Prov 13:13, Matt 7:24-27, 25:1-13.
7. We can gain true wisdom, if we take God's Word to heart. Ps 119:97-104, Deut 4:5-9, Proverbs cf. Jer 8:9.

9. We need not only to keep it in our minds and hearts, but to DO it! James 1:22-27, Matt 21:28-32.
1. Read consecutively and rapidly for a minimum of a half hour each day.
(a) The Bible was intended to be read this way. You can more reliably understand a passage, since you can see its context.
(b) You can finish the Bible at least once a year, so you can remember passages and see when they relate to each other.
(c) We need the whole Bible to become the kind of Christians God wants us to be. 2 Tim 3:16-17, Acts 20:26, 27.
(d) Leaders wisely recommend it. Heb 13:7,17.
2. Read a reliable translation (New King James, New American Standard, or New International versions) with today's English..
3. Leave detailed studies, memorizing Scripture, preparing Sunday School and other good things for other times.
4. Find a quiet, private place to concentrate on reading and read when you are best able to concentrate. The morning before you begin your day, has many advantages (Ps 5:3, 55:17, 88:13, Mark 1:35).
(a) You can more easily think about what you have read during the day.
(b) You can see prayers answered the same day.
(c) You are more alert.
(d) You tend not to put it off until the very end of your activities - for the "perfect" time that never comes. Give your best time to the Lord. Matt 6:33, 21.
5. Before you read, pray for wisdom and to be receptive to new things and all the Lord has revealed in His Word. Ps 27:11, 139:23,24.
CAUTION: Satan will attack our efforts to have a consistent, daily quiet time in an attempt to disrupt our dependence on God as well as our obedience to and growth in the Word. Recognize his techniques (2 Cor 2:11, 1 Pet 5:8) and properly resist him (James 4:7, Eph 6:10-18).
6. You have a daily appointment with your Creator. Are you keeping that appointment? Are you punctual?
1. What should your objective be in your devotional reading of the Scriptures?
2. What should Mark 1:31-35 tell us about our need for daily Bible reading?
3. If you cannot find the ideal environment of privacy and quiet, or if your Bible reading does not give you an emotional uplift, what should you do?
1. Memory verses.

3. What gets in the way or can get in the way of your quiet time?
