Joshua had experienced slavery in Egypt, deliverance by God and the leadership of Moses. He was driven to get the Israelites to Canaan, as God had promised this land to them.

Through Joshuas' leadership the Israelites conquer and claim their promised land.

Joshua reminds the people that they must obey the Lord and His word.
